More Pups
On the 26th, Lady (another foster with SSMPR) had 8 chocolate pups. She was a terrible mom and the first two pups died because she did not remove the sac. Once discovered in the morning, Lady was taken to the vet and they removed 6 pups by c-section ($1400). She refuses to take care of the surviving 4 and they need to be bottle fed every two hours. A wonderful volunteer is making it happen and we are praying they all survive.
Today, Norma (another foster with SSMPR) gave birth to 8 pups, 1 red male, 1 red female, 1 black and tan female, 2 black and tan males, 2 chocolate females, 1 chocolate male. They are all doing well! She started at 9:30 am and gave birth to her last one at 4pm. They all seem pretty healthly and she is taking good care of them. She will also need your prayers that they all survive.
Only one more pregnant puppy mill dog needs to give birth, I go on vacation tomorrow and will update you when I get back from our much needed Alaskan cruise.

Update on Pups
I am sorry to say that little Ollie and Sophie did not make it.... The other three pups are now 20 days old and are starting to walk. Here are some really cute pictures of the little boys. Hershey, Archie and Phil. Archie is the Black and Rust little guy on the left, Hershey is the Chocolate little boy upper left and Phil is the little guy on the right.
Archie did have a little accident a couple of days ago. Another puppy mill female dog we are fostering. Grabbed him, moved him and bite him enough to draw blood and leave three small puncture wounds on his left shoulder. Archie and Phil are identical.... now we call tell them apart! Anyone interested in adopting one of these little guys.... You can fill out an application at www.ssmpr.org and the location is Minnesota. They will not be ready to go until they are at least 10-12 weeks of age. They will be neutered and updated on shots when adoptable. Norma (another foster's dog) is ready to give birth anyday. Marcie may be pregnant and only have one baby and is ready to give birth anyday. Lady is definitely pregnant and is due at the end of the month. Wow! So many baby's.... You usually do not see puppys coming through rescues. The mom's will be available after 12 weeks and will be spayed and UTD on shots. Any Takers????

Puppies
We took some dogs into rescue on 4/12/09, 14 dogs came in when we were told there would only be four. I ended up taking 5 fosters... Way too many, but they needed a temporary home. I am now down to 3 fosters, but one was pregnant.
Today, we had five babies....
The first was born at 10am - a little girl we named Sophie 3.8oz
Next @ 10:14 am - a little boy arrived named Phil 4.6 oz
10:53am another little boy (our only chocolate one) named Hershey weighing in at 5.8 oz
Then there was 1 1/2 break and we thought we were done!
At 12.35 pm came another boy named Archie weighing 4.4 oz
Last one was a difficult birth for Izzy, at 1:18 pm she delivered a little boy named Oliver weighing only 3.4 oz. He was having difficulty breathing and Jessica stepped in and she rubbed him and swung him upside down to get him breathing. He continued to struggle to breathe, but finally was able to breathe. He is not nursing, so Mandi stopped by the store and picked up an eyedropper and some supplement milk.
It is now 7pm and he is still not nursing, but has taken some milk with an eyedropper. I am hoping this little guy makes it and we will continue to feed him every few hours. Hopefully, soon he will start to nurse.

Missouri Dog Auction
I know I haven't posted in awhile, but did not really have much going on. I am now volunteering with another min pin rescue group called Southern Star minpin rescue. There was a group of girls from the local vet tech school that went to an auction on 4/11/09 and they let us know there would be 27 min pins. They wanted to know if the group could take any and we (as a group) decided that there was room for 4-5 more fosters. They made the 9 hour trek to Missouri with directions of no more than 5 and they would be bringing back more for other rescues.
As we anxiously sat around and waited for the phone call.... The call came after 5 pm. They had more than 5 min pins, at this point they were still waiting in line to pay and just wanted to forewarn us. Some were going for $1 each and they knew if they didn't bid they would be put down. They would call back later and let us know how many as they had purchased about 50 dogs. As we all went into a panic..... Heather did a great job making phone calls and trying to line up additional foster families and/or future adopters. Several hours passed and we finally received the call around 7pm... They had purchased 14 min pins!!! I decided to take 4 - two puppies and two older dogs. Everyone else stepped up and we were able to accept them all, the alternative was they were going to take them to the Humane society!! What! We could not let that happen.
Well, they drove all night and we had to get up at 3:30 am to leave at 4 for the hour drive down to Owatonna to meet in the Walmart parking lot at 5 am. Heather and Mandi met at my house, Bob drove and we all piled in the van with a bunch of kennels. Now remember, these dogs were at the auction all day on Saturday, drove overnight and had not had any food, water, or bathroom break.....They called when we were on our way and were having a hard time breathing in the van, they had over 50 dogs and many had been sitting in soiled kennels.
We arrived and started pulling out dogs, Heather is very organized and was labeling kennels, attaching names to keep everything organized. We were removing them from their kennels and as we put them in ours the smell was becoming pretty overwhelming. One puppy (mine) was in some distress and was hyperventilating. We wrapped him in a warm blanket and I held him on the drive home. We decided being in the cold van with the windows open was much better than the feces smell of 14 min pins for the hour drive.
When we got home, Heather and Mandi went on their way with all but my 4. My group all got food and water, then taken for a walk in the backyard. Now, everyone got collars, names, two baths (some are still a little stinky), weight, etc.

Dog Auctions
Whoever has not heard me speak of the horrors of puppy mills has not spoken with me lately.
About 2 1/2 hours from our home in Minnesota is Clark County, Wisconsin. This county has a very large Amish and Mennonite community and due to the very lax laws within the state of Wisconsin, the communities breed puppies as a way to make money. This in and of itself is not bad, however the dogs are not treated humanely as the Millers think of them as livestock (not pets). The dogs are placed in kennels (wire cages), stacked within cold barns, no bedding, flooring, etc. Some puppy mills will do there own vetting, including spaying, neutering, c-sections, etc...with no anesthesia. If the dog/puppy dies... oh well, there body gets thrown in a pile and another takes their place. The breeding dogs are not socialized, have deformed feet (due to the wire floors), are matted, dirty, and diseased. These are the purebreed puppies which are sold to pet shops and the public which is not aware of these conditions supports the millers.
Well, in Thorp Wisconsin (Clark County) Horst Auctions holds a dog auction every six months. The most current auction on March 11, and I decided I needed to attend to actually see this event. I was hoping I would not be arrested, nor come home with a bunch of dogs.
Originally, we had 5 of us from the rescues going but as it got closer we were now down to three. We made the 2 1/2 hour trek and arrived about 30 minutes before the auction was to begin. Outside there were the protestors holding signs. At the door there was a sign that would not allow cameras, cell phones or recording devices. Heather, Kim and I walked through the kennel area and looked at the dogs. There were appr. 240 dogs. Most were clipped, but a few were matted and some of the older dogs had deformed feet. Even though there were no min pins, I decided to get a bidding number. Just in Case!!!!
We sat up in the bleachers and overlooked the floor, where most of the bidding took place. You could usually tell the rescue groups based on the number of women in the party and how they reacted. As we looked around the room, you saw groups of Mennonites, Amish, rescues, breeders, families with kids and couples looking for pets. Even a couple of police officers to maintain the peace.
As the bidding started, the dogs were brought up to the platform, the auctions would state their DOB, type of dog, male/female and would let you know if there were any conditions such as a hernia, pregnant and when due, in heat, proven, bred, etc.
When the first few dogs, were brought up I was overcome with emotions, realizing that the fate of these dogs rested in the hands of the bidders. As the rescue groups were bidding against each other, the prices were getting higher. Some dogs went as high as $800. There were Yorkies, Chihuahua puppies, Westies, Poodles, Papillions, English Bulldogs, Bichons, Chows, mixed breed dogs, puppies and adults and many other small breed dogs. One rescue group bid on alot of the dogs and had to have spent between $5000-7000 total. An adorable 8 week old Chihuahua went to an Amish man for $210 and as the puppy was placed back in the kennel, you could only imagine its fate. The pregnant females were held up on two legs so you could see their bellies, two female dogs had hernias but were sold to a breeder. A female with this type of hernia should not get pregnant. Some dogs, such as the Cairn Terriers went for $25 - $50 each. Even though I did not keep track, I would have to say the average price was between $150-$250 per dog. After 2 1/2 hours, the auction ended. We left quickly and drove away, all of us not wanting to spend money at the Auction house concessionaire stand. We would rather give our money to another establishment.
After much thought, I am not sure the rescues are doing any good. Based on the high $$ they were paying for the old, sick and healthy dogs, are they encouraging the millers to continue to breed and sell their dogs instead of giving them to the rescues. Are the rescues helping the dogs, and encouraging the millers to breed more. Beacause if they can't sell them, they know the rescuers will pay big $$ at auction. Are they getting more money at the auctions, then from the pet stores?
Even though we went and saw the auction first hand, I don't think I can even began to decide what is the right answer to my questions. The only thing that can stop this cycle would be to ban dog auctions. I do not live in the state of Wisconsin, but in every state there are laws which can protect the animals against being treated inhumanely. I would encourage everyone to check to internet and contact your local legislation to ensure this type of auction is stopped and there are laws to protect the animals.

Pet Food Survey
Jessica is doing a pet food survey to become a nutritional advocate and as a class project. I would greatly appreciate any and all help. She would prefer only 2 pets per person, one cat and one dog
would be ideal, but two dogs would be fine.
She needs to know species, age, what brand of food is fed, its form (dry, canned, both), Where it is purchased from (grocery store, pet store, vet, etc.), and why you buy that particular brand (vet recommended, price, commercial ads, pet likes the taste, on special/coupons, variety, other).

Snow and more SNOW Yuch!!
Well, it started this snowing & blowing mess around noon. Everyone at work freaked out so I sent everyone home early. What a mess.... When I got home I was able to get up the street, but could not make it into the driveway. I had to park, call Bob to find out how to use the snowblower and I blew out the driveway so I could park.
Rick is out front again at 8:45pm snowblowing the driveway, so that when Bob gets home at 10:30 he can park. It is still coming down and blowing. I had heard it was supposed to stop at 6-7 pm, but it doesn't seem to be letting up. On a good note, they did plow the street....It usually does not get plowed and the cars can now make it up the hill.
It is going to be a fun drive into work in the morning. Hopefully, it will stop snowing soon and the plows will have this mess cleaned up by morning.
Everyone has been giving me a hard time about not blogging, so here are some updates. Roo's adoption was finalized. We still have Rambo who is making progress, but very slowly. I picked up two 1 1/2 year old sisters on Friday night. They are very cute, but need some discipline and manners. I already have a potential adopter and he is interested in taking both of them. Very exciting that they get to stay together.
March 11, I will be attending the dreaded puppy mill auction in Wisconsin. I hope all goes well and I don't get arrested. There are 4-5 of us attending and I hope we can stay out of trouble and keep our emotions in check. I do think we will come home with some dogs.......

Needed Rest
I took Friday and next Monday off from work. I need some rest! Well, of course while on my rest break.... Roo was adopted! Yipee!!! I have had him almost two months and was starting to think he was getting too attached to us. He went to a middle aged single guy and I think it will work out wonderfully. Of course, he has a one week trail period, so everyone keep your fingers crossed.
Even with this heat wave (45 degrees) we are having I did not go anywhere today. I stayed home, listed stuff on ebay, and watched TV (did the dishes, but I don't want to admit to that).
Tomorrow we are going to spend the day with Bob's mom and Dan. We are going to Red Wing shopping (Antique malls) and have lunch. It should be a really good time.
I won an annual pass to the movie theater at The Mall of America and in the past week have seen 4 movies. I head up there after work (by myself) and see the latest movies.
So I am going to give you my opinion on what I have seen based on five Stars. Five Stars being the best.

Jessica set a tentative date!!!!
Jessica called with a tentative date for her wedding. October 9, 2010!! Everyone mark it on your calendars. Now comes the STRESS!!!!
We have been very busy this week. I took Thursday off work and Bob & I drove to Wisconsin (2 hours) to meet the WI min pin regional coordinator who had picked up two puppy mill dogs from the Milwaukee humane society. They are both scared to death of people!
We immediately stopped at the vet and got them their rabies shot (the only thing the WI humane society did not do). Finnian is the small fat guy. Who was so afraid he was crawling on the ground and looked like a turtle. Poor Guy! Finnian went to another foster home and they are working with him on socializing him to people. I took Mr. Darcy and immediately changed his name to Mr. Rambo. He is a big guy who weighs appr 18 pounds and stands 16" tall. This is large for a min pin. He also is extremely afraid of people. Bob & I are both working with him daily, but so far see very little progress. The terror in his eyes when you try to pet him or talk to him is clearly apparant. He is not aggressive at all and shakes when he is picked up. I am hoping that time, patience and love will heal his inner wounds.
We are having a min pin playdate/fundraiser on 1/18 and I have been busy making doggy treats and belly bands. We are hoping to be able to raise funds to help more dogs.
On the same day, I picked up the two guys from WI. Kim, one the the MN reg. coordinators picked up a little girl. She weighed appr. 3 pounds and should be at least 6-7 pounds, she is appr. 2 yrs old and could not use her rear legs. The diagnosis was not good, but Kim took her to the vet who prescribed streoids and hydrotherapy twice a day. Everyone.....did not think this little girl had a chance. She was taken away from a home who stated they found her on their doorstep frozen to a box, but the police said in the past they had removed other abused dogs from the same home. GREAT NEWS! I got an email from Kim today and LaTee is now walking. She is using one leg about 75% and the other about 25%. This is after only two days of therapy, food and love. Pictures of LaTee are above - The bottom pix is the first day she came in unable to walk and the one on the top is today...

Happy New Year!
Well, another year has come and gone.... Bob had to work on NYE so I decided to go to the casino. I was home by 9:30pm. I lost my small allotment and came home. I was tired and was asleep before midnight.
Today, we decided to list more items on ebay and spent the early afternoon listing. I had really slacked off the last few weeks due to the holidays. We now have "45" active auctions and will try to keep them going. We still have a ton of stuff to list.
Roo is back.....He was adopted for one day and bite the woman's son in the nose. Not a good sign! I am not sure how we will ever get him adopted. He will need a adult only home with someone who is familiar with the breed.

Another busy weekend
It seems that the weekends just fly by. Rick wanted to go down to Cabela's yesterday and the three of us trekked down there and by the time we got home it was dinner time. Of course, while we were down there we had to go to the Antique mall. I can't believe I did not find anything to buy!!! It was amazing as I always find something.....
Last night I started making belly bands for the min pin fundraiser. I made about 10 before I ran out of velcro. We had to make a trip to Mill end fabrics first thing this morning to pick up more velcro and I found some more fabric. I think I have enough to make about 30-40 of these things. If they all don't sell I will donate them to the foster homes to use.
This morning we got an application for Roo. We set up the home visit in Maple Grove at 2 and came home dogless. We now have NO FOSTERS!!!!! I wonder how long this will last.........
Then I came home and started to put away the Avon (that I needed from the auction). Bob is still going throught the boxes and finding what I need and the rest I sell on ebay. This week with the holidays I did not list much. But we still have an overwhelming amount of boxes downstairs to go through and list.
I made about 5 more belly bands now I am ready for bed.... I think I need a vacation!
Last night I started making belly bands for the min pin fundraiser. I made about 10 before I ran out of velcro. We had to make a trip to Mill end fabrics first thing this morning to pick up more velcro and I found some more fabric. I think I have enough to make about 30-40 of these things. If they all don't sell I will donate them to the foster homes to use.
This morning we got an application for Roo. We set up the home visit in Maple Grove at 2 and came home dogless. We now have NO FOSTERS!!!!! I wonder how long this will last.........
Then I came home and started to put away the Avon (that I needed from the auction). Bob is still going throught the boxes and finding what I need and the rest I sell on ebay. Merry Christmas
We had a wonderful Christmas! I got up early and started Christmas Dinner. Bob got up around 10 and started helping. Everyone was due to arrive around noon for dinner.
I had asked Jessica to come a little early to help set the table. Her and Chopper had stayed in Wisconsin with his family for Christmas eve to celebrate. When they got here everyone chipped in and helped. Jessica and Chopper set the table and fixed the drinks. Bob went to pick up his mother and Rick mashed the potatos (Yes! we had homemade mashed pototoes) Rick thought I didn't know how to make homemade mashed potatoes, but he forgot that boxed potatoes are fairly newer (since were old) and this was the only way to make them......before the boxed stuff. We ate at exactly noon - we couldn't have planned it better.
Bob's mom made a homemade pecan pie (with fresh pecans direct from Georgia). Boy! Was it good. Jessica was supposed to bring the pumpkin pie, but was apparantly sleeping when Bob called her as she did not remember the conversation.
We had a wonderful dinner with all the favorites....then opened presents. Everyone seemed happy with their gifts.
Bob, Jessica and Chopper had to work this evening and take naps so we were done by 3 pm. And of course I forgot to take pictures..... So sorry nothing to see! I have to get better with the picture stuff.

Chocolate and Dogs - Do not go together
What Fun! We came back from the grocery store to find a wrapped box of Cashew turtles ripped open on the floor (it was on the coffee table). Out of 24 pieces of candy 12 were missing and we had 4 guilty dogs! After running to the internet, we called the local 24 hour animal hospital for advice.
Step 1 - Get a syringe and hydrogen peroxide.
Step 2- Every 15 minutes shoot one tablespoon of peroxide down the each dogs throat.
Step 3- Watch them throwing up and repeat steps 1 & 2 three times.
We had all four dogs throwing up candy....
Step 4- Watch them for three days for signs of trembling, bloating , diarrhea, etc.
Step 5 - Any signs from above immediately take them to the vet!
This was not fun! Please do not wrap candy and put under the tree or anywhere they can get to it if you have dogs.

Christmas is coming....
We had major snow yesterday and Jessica did not want to drive from work to LeSueuer. She came over to sleep and hang out until she had to go back to work at midnight. We went shopping at Kohl's and Cub foods. Boy! It was bitter cold with the wind blowing.
Bob and I went up to Hinkley in the morning to deliver Ruby to her new home. We knew the snow storm was coming and got an early start. Even though it was snowing, we made it there in 2 hours (normally it should take 1 hr. 40 minutes). We left there at noon and started back. We stopped at a thrift store in Pine City and had lunch at the KFC buffet. It wasn't too bad until we got to north Minneapolis and started to see cars in ditches and the white out conditions with snow & ice. We made it home about 3 and Bob had signed up to work overtime (he had to be at work at 10pm). He went to sleep and Jess and I went shopping.
I bought her some gloves and ear muffs for Christmas. I am really a stickler for not letting the kids open there presents before Christmas even when they know what it is. But last night when she left for work I told her to put on the gloves and ear muffs (as she did not bring any with). I think she was shocked!!!!
I just got an email from Ruby's new owner and she already is in love! She slept with them and gave them hugs and kisses this morning. I only have Roo left to find a home. He will have to go to a family with no kids (he was given up because he was nipping at the kids). Joey is doing great and is back to be a cranky old man, but he is also starting to play with the other dogs. A sign that he is not in as much pain and discomfort as he previously had.

Day off
I took today off work to put up Christmas decorations. Hopefully, I will get it all done today. I wanted to show everyone my aerogarden. I bought it at Linens n things at their going out of business sale. It was 40% off and is a indoor hydrophonic garden. This means...no dirt. The pre packaged (sold separately) pods fit into holes and water is absorbed through sponges that the seeds sit into. As they grow (1-3 days to sprout) you remove the clear plastic tops and within 3-4 weeks you have salad for up to 4 months. I bought the salad greens kit, but there are many other kits available. I planted this last Sunday night and from the pictures you can see how well it is doing.
Kimmie's new mom will be coming to meet her tonight and taking her back to Canada tomorrow. She is doing so.........well. I did get another minpin named Roo - he is three years old.
Well Bob just got up and probably want to do some work before we take Joey for his 1pm vet appt.

Christmas shopping
Not much going on! Just Christmas shopping, got another minpin named Roo, babysitting Jessica's dogs! Jessica is celebrating Christmas today in Wisconsin with Choppers family. She dropped off her dogs this morning and will pick them up tonight.
Our six monsters (min pins) have been going nuts....The dogs (Cronus & Beagle) took over their area and they are not allowed in the 4 season porch to lay by the fire. We actually put on the living room fireplace, brought in their pillows & toys and tried to entice them to the new spot!!!! Not working too well at the moment.
Kimmie is going to be adopted and moving to Canada on Saturday. Boy!!! I am going to miss her.

Thanksgiving - Bob's Birthday - Kimmie update
We had a great Thanksgiving. It was the last Thanksgiving at the Lillie house (as they will be moving to Indiana. All the family was there and we had a great time and ate lots of good food.
Hats off to Lori, Jody and Dean for cooking.
Friday was Bob's birthday. We did not do much - had some cake, etc.
I wanted everyone to see some pictures of Kimmie. It is amazing how much better she looks after only one week.
